PRICES OF FOODS.
There is little chance of food prices ever returning to the old low standard according to Willet M. Hayes, acting secretary of agriculture. He says that only one-third of the total population is now engaged in producing food for the remaining two-thirds. Only two generations ago, he declared, two-thirds of the population were engaged in production. And to this reversal, he says, is the high cost of living mainly due.-News matter from Washington.
Mr. Hayes is right. He offers a reason for the high prices received by farmers for their products. One-third of the people of this country not only produce their own food supplies and the food supplies for the other two-thirds of their fellow citizens, but also a vast surplus of food supplies which goes abroad to feed the hungry nations of the earth. Let the people lay hold of these facts and they will not be perturbed by those prophets of evil who prophesy harm to come to the farmers by reason of tariff revision downward.
It is well to bear in mind that the great revolt against high prices is a revolt against high prices secured by special privileges and by exploitation, and not against high prices secured legitimately in the fair and open market.
