The Columbia (Ten.) Observer, of the 27th ult. says:

"There will be but two candidates for the Presidency."

We should like to see the testimony to prove that fact. The legislature of Massachusetts have nominated Daniel Webster: yet, it is believed, that he will not permit his name to be run, and there is an understanding among the scattered and vanquished parties, to run Mr. Clay. This is evident to our mind from the circumstances that the Whigs have not, with the above exception, nominated a candidate for the Presidency. If they did not intend to run a candidate of their own politics, why have they not selected one of the two prominent Republican candidates? It is plain that we are to be split up and misled by the allurements held out by the opposition; and when we are well divided, then Mr. Clay is to be brought on to the field. The race will be run, we will be carried into the House, and then we will have an improved assortment of bargain, intrigue and corruption.
