SPRINGFIELD. Oct. 15.

To the Clergy

FATHERS, I hear that some, in these days, blame you for preaching politics. The tories found fault with ministers on the same account in the time of the American revolution but the whigs thought they did their duty: and if a minister, in his preaching or prayers, took but little notice of the state of the country, he was suspected of being a tory. I, perhaps foolishly, thought that the doctrine of passive obedience and non-resistance was long ago exploded; but I find it revived by those who are supporting the present administration, at all events, right or wrong. They are tories: they make the same complaints, (yea and against federal printers) as the old tories did. But this is no new thing under the sun. Jeremiah, Micaiah and other prophets dissuaded from war, and foretold the consequences of it ;
