ATLANTA, Ga.-To date, Georgia has the largest number of Confederate widows to apply for pensions under a new federal law passed last May, according to Veteran Administration officials in Washington. The Georgia total so far: 180.
In all, nearly 900 Confederate widows from 20 states and the District of Columbia have applied. An estimated 1,400 are still alive and eligible.
To be eligible, the widow must not have remarried. In most cases, the Confederate widows already are drawing pensions from the state of their residence.
The new pension from the federal government will not interfere with their state money except in Tennessee and North Carolina, where the state money will be automatically cut off if the federal funds are accepted.
Texas is second in the number of applicants so far with 130. Alabama and Virginia are third with 114 each.
