UVALDE, Tex., (A) - Former Vice President John Nance Garner marked 92 years of colorful life--half of it spent in public service--Tuesday surrounded by old friends and visitors to this hill country town.
The still-spry "Cactus Jack" said he has no more ambitions and expects to spend his remaining life chatting with friends and shelling pecans--the routine he has followed since he left Washington in 1941 after 38 years of often stormy political life.
Garner became honorary mayor of Uvalde for the day but said he plans no sweeping changes.
Garner, delighted by the host of Uvalde residents who trooped through his frame cottage and the stack of letters and telegrams wishing him well, said the only promise he ever made during his 46 years in office was "I'll do the best I can."
