Extract of a Letter from a Gentleman lately arrived from Newfoundland.

This season I revisited Labradore, and had several fresh conferences with the Esquimaux Tribes: from whose repeated behaviour, as well as what I saw of the coast and harbours, I am more and more convinced of the many and great advantages that may be easily derived to us by means of a spirited well encouraged trade as well as fishery there; The Governor himself sent several times on shore, and received him with so much well judged affability and courtesy, as greatly gained upon them, insomuch that they and their wives and children freely eat and drank with us in a manner that I believe they never before had done with any Europeans; their visible confidence, and a good opinion of the English was the more striking, as their well known prejudices against us had been so artfully propagated and industriously nursed up by the French from their first connections with them. -- Their country is large, and their tribe are very numerous. - I have much reason to think they are all worth our better acquaintance with; especially, as now they will not be for us that we have had so circumspect, so vigilant, and sensible good consequence to Great Britain, happy has it been our right conduct in these parts will be of inexpressible consequence, so open to future irritations, rival seductions, &c. - As do spirited, as well and judicious a Governor as Mr. Palliser, his laborious important charge; need enough has there been of all his power, together with the exertions of the officers under his command to keep our restless rivals in any tolerable order. -- Never was the old proverb of giving an Inch &c more verified. -- Their subtleties and machinations be equalled by nothing but their insolent and deceitful clamours upon detection. ! their written Advertisements of well assorted cargoes and variety of other goods brought by them for sale to us, and bartered for fish and oil, are so not do for or content them: But I trust that the importance of the object will proportionably engage the attention of our superiors, so as to meet the growing evil in time, and effectually prevent their future encroachments, which otherwise may lead to our future ruin.
