PHILADELPHIA, November 17. — The American line steamship company's wharves were burned this evening. The pier was enclosed by large frame buildings the lower stories of which were used for the storage of freight, and the upper stories for the temporary home of emigrants. The watchman, in lighting the gas with a small lamp attached to a pole, the lamp fell and rolled between the cotton, which ignited, and in a short time the structure was in flames and the fire spread rapidly. Thousands of dollars worth of goods awaiting shipment on the steamer Lord Clyde were swept away. Alarms were sounded and in a few minutes over two-thirds was out, and the tug-boats on the river also lent assistance. Of the vessels lying close to the fire the steamship India narrowly escaped. The fire burned over three hours and the buildings were almost entirely destroyed. Loss, nearly $100,000; partially insured.
