Interesting to the citizens of the U. States.
The Government of Great Britain, as a measure of dire necessity for carrying on the war, oblige the shippers of all goods to the United States to pay an exorbitant duty of, 4 per cent. which is charged in the invoices, and finally paid by the citizens (consumers of their goods) in the United States. The amount of British exports to America, on an average of ten years, is 25,000,000 annually, which at 4 per cent. produces a revenue of 1,000,000 dollars annually, paid to Great Britain by the consumers of their goods in America. Query. How many useful manufactories would this sum encourage in our own country; and how many able bodied men might be secured, by the appropriation of one million of dollars annually to the encouragement of the mechanic arts? -Aurora.
