ANCHORAGE GOV. Wm. A. Egan said here today he has just learned reliably that Republican gubernatorial candidate Mike Stepovich has decided to accept his debate challenge.
He said he hopes Stepovich will announce his acceptance "real soon" because his, Egan's, campaign plans are being kept "up in the air" by this "indecision on the part of Stepovich."
Egan said he will leave here tomorrow for a campaign swing through northwest and western Alaska and will return about Oct. 10. He said he will visit Barrow, Nome, Kotzebue, Bethel, Dillingham, Naknek, King Salmon and Kodiak.
The governor said he hopes the debate will be forthcoming "so the people will really be in a position to form considered opinions as to who is competent to be governor of Alaska."
He said he has held up making any campaign plans pending a decision by Stepovich on the debate but now must go ahead with these plans. He said he must visit northwestern and western Alaska before winter weather sets in.
