MOST COSTLY FISCAL YEAR ENDS TODAY

Treasury Department Spent Approximately $32,500,000,000

WASHINGTON, June 30—Having spent in 12 months more than the entire cost of the first World War, the United States Treasury Department today closes its books on the costliest fiscal year in its history, according to the temporary records.

Although the budget for the new fiscal year beginning tomorrow will be more than double that of the old year's, exact figures will not be available for a few days.

But temporary tabulations show that the Treasury spent in the past year some 26 billion dollars for direct war purposes, plus enough more for other governmental activities, some of which were related to the war effort, which will make expenditures total approximately thirty-two and a half billion.
