NICE WILL BE THE 9TH
GOVERNOR OF MARYLAND

Citizens of Annapolis Have Seen
Seventy-five Inaugurals

Two hundred forty years ago, Annapolis received its first governor of Maryland as a resident and since that time the city has seen 75 inaugurals.

When Harry W. Nice takes the oath of office as governor on January 9 he will be the eighty-ninth man who has governed the state since 1631, when William Claiborne settled on Kent Island and governed it under a trading commission issued by Virginia.

The seat of the state government was transferred from St. Mary's City to Annapolis in 1649, when Francis Nicholson was governor. From that time until the revolution, sixteen men served as governors, practically all being royal governors.

During the revolution, the colony was governed by a provincial convention with a council of safety exercising power between sittings of the convention.

The first of the state governors elected annually by the legislature, with an executive council, was Thomas Johnson, who took office in 1777.

Since his term, 50 different men have held the office. Thirty-seven men governed the colony before Johnson became the executive. Several served more than one term.

Although the inauguration of Governor-Elect Nice will be the city's seventy-sixth inauguration, it will be fifteen years since residents have seen a new executive installed in office.

Governor Ritchie succeeded Governor Emerson C. Harrington on January 14, 1920, the inaugural ceremonies being simple, at his request. Governor Ritchie was sworn in by the late Chief Judge A. Hunter Boyd, of the court of appeals in the Senate chamber. He delivered his inaugural address in the house of delegates chamber, Governor Harrington making a farewell address. The parade was small, consisting chiefly of the Second Regiment band and members of the Fifth Regiment veteran corps.
