Full Text
Servile.—The Springfield Republican shows its servility to the Slaveholding Power, by sneering at the Anti-Slavery tendencies of the Hon. Henry Wilson, a Whig member of the House of Representatives, and one of the ablest and best men of that party. The fact would seem to be, that the Whig Cottonocracy—North and South—have undertaken to train that party in imitation of 'the Democracy,' for an open espousal of Slavery, as 'a great American principle,' and as essential to their nationality. Hence we find most of the Whig papers very cautious in speaking of slavery and slaveholders with anything like disapprobation, while they improve every opportunity to laud those politicians, who are slaveholders, or who are well known to sympathize with them, at the same time sneering at, finding fault with, or denouncing, those members of the party who stand by their integrity. Among the honorable exceptions are the Boston Courier, the New-York Tribune, and the Albany Evening Journal.—Hampshire Herald.
