| PHILADELPHIA, June 3. |
There is no truth in the report of an arrival in the Delaware from Bordeaux, as stated in the Aurora of this morning. A gentleman passenger in the Active, from St. Bartholomews, says, that he was captured on his passage from Bordeaux, which port he left about the 1st May, at which time there was great rejoicing on account of the news of France and Austria having concluded a strict alliance, the latter power giving two of her principal ports as a security for the faithful performance of the compact. This report, (which we are far from believing) probably gave rise to the paragraph in the Aurora. Relf. June 5. The report of an arrival in the Delaware from Bordeaux, appears to be unfounded, & is now supplanted by a similar report from St. Bartholomews. We gave the matter only as a report; but our judgment as to the alleged fact led us to disbelieve it; for we could not credit the conclusion of a treaty on the part of Austria with France, after all her stupendous preparations for war against France, upon any other grounds than an assumption that the court of Austria had become more wise than it has been half a century past, an assumption which there is nothing to sanction. We believe that the Austrian cabinet will be stimulated to its destruction. in order to occupy France in Europe, while the British are carrying on their plans in South America, plans long formed, much matured, of which the agents are already in the Islands and on the Main, where we may expect at no very remote day, to hear of an explosion which will require all the wisdom and constancy of our government. in its neutral and pacific policy, to guard our country from the effects of. The United States, with a steady pursuit of the policy that has so far preserved us from direct involvement in European conflicts, will no doubt profit commercially by the convulsions which Great Britain is stirring up in South America; the French scattered over those colonies, will like those of Havanna & St. Jago, and like those of St. Domingo in former years, fly to our country, and the wealth of the fugitives will be diffused among us; but the most lucrative effects will be what has greatly influenced the abandonment of the British orders in council: the provisions and other supplies of the United States will be essential to any military or maritime enterprizes; and as Britain is cut out from the supplies of bullion, which were formerly procured by agents established at Cadiz, Lisbon, & all the seaports of Spain; the U.S. will become the depot of the bullion plundered or extracted from South America. How far these considerations may affect us with other nations, is not easy to anticipate...Aurora.
