Tubercular Litter Case Coming 'Home' Today

The area's first Korean prisoner of war is coming home today a litter case seriously ill with tuberculosis.

The Camp Pickett public information office told the Herald Thursday that the Surgeon-General's office in Washington sent instructions that Pvt. Willie B. Hatcher, a litter case, ill with tuberculosis, would arrive Friday morning by hospital plane.

Hatcher, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Hatcher, of Farmville, is to be flown from Travis Air Force Base, on the West Coast where he arrived by plane from Korea on Tuesday.

Hospital Treatment

Hatcher, who was captured in November 1950 shortly after arriving in Korea, will be treated at the U. S. Army Hospital, Camp Pickett. The Defense Department will place sick POW's in such installations nearest their homes, it has been announced from Washington.

The Negro serviceman's condition was called "serious" in a national press story given prominent nation-wide treatment and written from Travis Air Force Base when the hospital plane landed with the first U. S. POW returnees-all sick. That was the now-famous story which began "There were smiles and tears today"- as the first POW's returned. The story said all-including a Virginia Negro-were seriously ill. That one is Pvt. Willie B. Hatcher, home at last.
