Full Text

The Pacific Medical and Surgical Journal, edited and published in this city, says the San Francisco National, by John B. Trask, M. D., and David Wooster, M. D., in commenting upon the conduct of the committee who quietly listened and tacitly acquiesced in the scandalous libel upon the character of the female portion of our community, perpetrated by their chairman, makes use of the following language:

"The unvarnished truth is, that this committee knew that this clause (referring to the clause containing the libel) was false and without mitigation, but were too reckless of their own, and the honor of the Society to suppress it, or say in a note that it was wholly and notoriously false."

In another place the following pertinent remarks are used:

"No; gentlemen, this will not do. Your defence proves too much. It asserts you foresaw the effects of that slanderous paragraph had it in your power to suppress it, and did not do it. Ye also are guilty of uttering it equally guilty with the author himself, and the State Medical Society cannot forgive you. 'He that knoweth of a conspiracy against the State and doth not reveal it, is himself guilty of treason.' Thus said the elder Dr. Town. How much more shall he who not only knows, but has it in his power to suppress the conspiracy, be deemed guilty, neglecting to do so. This is more than a conspiracy against a State. It is a historical monument erected by a reputably learned body, and on one of its facets is engraved that two thirds of the urban females of California are infamous. It will remain a legible inscription when the newspaper disputes the name of the author, and those who justly overwhelm him with reproaches, shall have been forgotten."
