Martinsburg Gazette, May 26, 1825.
The Hessian Fly, from accounts, have made its appearance in the vicinity of Easton in Maryland, to the no small alarm of the farmers: whole fields are said to have been laid waste, especially where the land is light. Similar complaints have reached us, thro' the papers, from the South. In a small excursion we had a few days since, through the county of Jefferson, we were pleased to find, that the prospects of the farmer were never more promising; the crop of wheat and rye bid fair to be an abundant one; clover, too, is fine. With our Berkeley friends we have been very particular in making enquiries on the state of the crops; and it is with unfeigned pleasure that we can assure our readers, that, with a very few exceptions, the crop of wheat and rye were never more promising; clover, in general, in this county will be short. In a conversation with a practical farmer a few days since, he assured us that his wheat crop is better than it has been for the last twenty years. The Winchester Republican informs us that the prospects of the farmer in Frederick county are truly flattering. In fact, it is generally supposed that the wheat crop will be better in quantity and quality, than any that has been harvested for many years past. "Speed the Plough."
