Courtmartial Awaits Men Who Attempted to Hang District Court Judge

SITUATION TENSE; CITIZENS GO ARMED

PRIMGHAR, Iowa, May 1.- (UP).-Capt. H. E. Steadman, commanding a detail of 50 national guardsmen, sent here from Le Mars to arrest alleged leaders in the farm unrest situation, announced today they had arrested 12 men and 11 others are being sought.

LE MARS, Iowa, May 1. (UP).

Martial law was extended to the third Iowa county today when national guardsmen continued a drive to arrest leaders of the recent disorderly protest against farm mortgage foreclosures.

A trial by courtmartial was ordered for farmers held on charges of attempting to hang a district judge.

The guardsmen had established complete military rule last night over Plymouth county and announced that farmers convicted of participating last week in an attack upon Judge Charles C. Bradley would be courtmartialed.

The situation in the corn lands was so tense that respected citizens carried pistols in their pockets as they attended church services and a priest turned his president's day sermon into a fervent plea that there be a halt to violence.

Khaki-clad soldiers patrolled the countryside seeking farmer fugitives who fled after the attack last Thursday on Judge Bradley.

The officers, now in complete control of Plymouth county and almost complete control of Crawford county, concentrated their efforts during the day to rounding up additional men among the list of some 60 accused of participating in the attack.

Five of the men were held today in jail at Sioux City, where they were spirited after rumors spread that a mob planned to attempt to free them. Five more were held here in an improvised guardhouse.

Colonel Glenn C. Haynes, in command of the 250 national guardsmen here, issued the order last night for trial of the farmers at court martial.
