An attempt was made to rob the New London Bank by Thomas Rutland, an Englishman and barber at the Steamboat Hotel basement. He was discovered coming out of the Bank by Mr. West, who had noticed noise and light. Rutland entered the Hotel basement; West secured the door, called for assistance, and Rutland was captured. Search revealed false keys in ash heap.
