A THOUGHT.

Can Pleasure's gay fantastic train,
Or Mirth's distracting voice,
Free the sad heart from Sorrow's reign,
Or bid the soul rejoice?

'Tis far beyond this world's weak power
To calm the troubled breast;
Nor Genius' ray, nor Wisdom's lore
Can soothe our cares to rest.

Not all Creation's varied grace,
When vernal seasons roll,
Can the deep lines of death efface,
Or mem'ry's power control.

Then why should man, whom Heaven
With rays of light divine,
Illumes
To error's deepened sombre glooms
His mental powers confine?

'Tis thine, O Virtue! soothing power,
To give the smile of ease,
And on Adversity's dark hour,
To pour the tide of peace.
