Badajoz, May 5, 1810.
The military and patriotick memorial of the left wing of the army, published in this city, includes in yesterday's number the following address:
ANNIVERSARY OF THE SECOND MAY.
Illustrious martyrs to the infant liberty of Spain! Your venerable manes surround my audience. I now record that day of terror and affliction, of hope and glory, when you sealed with your blood the national independence; Valarde! Daoiz! Names cherished by humanity, and exalted to the heights of heroism! Valarde, Daoiz and all you intrepid inhabitants of Madrid, who being the mark of the French artillery, checked without arms the fury of the tyrant, and, breaking through his columns, ye first, on the discovery of his perfidy, hoisted up the glorious standard of liberty!! I pay my homage to you. If my feeble voice reaches your silent tombs, wherein you rest, covered with wounds, salute your heads and smile at the sight of your noble deeds having been faithfully emulated by your fellow patriots. Yes, heroes! we all swear to partake of your fate, to the grave, and sacredly tender to your memory the tribute of our gratitude and admiration.
The 2d inst. was the second anniversary day of our memorable revolution. A day glorious to Spain, and which will never be forgotten by the good and courageous patriots, has been celebrated in this city in a manner suited to the occasion. Divine service was solemnly performed in the Cathedral, offering thanks to the Almighty; a grand mass having been officiated by our illustrious bishop, in the presence of the supreme junta of this province, all the officers and an immense concourse of people, were all gladdened at the presence of his excellency the Marquis of Romana, and their hearts melted at the recital of the splendid deeds of their brethren of Madrid. An appropriate sermon was delivered by the Deacon of the holy church of Badajoz, upon the present circumstances of the nation; and at the conclusion of the mass, his excellency the Marquis of Romana went on renewing publicly the oath for revenging the mother country and establishing its independence. "I swear,' (said this worthy general, holding his drawn sword in one hand, while the other covered the Holy Evangelists) "not to lay down my arms until I have fully revenged my country, and driven from its surface all the enemies that infest it. Do you (said he) swear to the same?" The numerous assembly of chiefs and officers who surrounded him, unanimously exclaimed with heretofore unknown enthusiasm--Yes, General, we all swear to it.
His excellency having previously issued orders that all the troops under his command with the garrison of the place should muster under arms in the afternoon, on the other side of the bridge, and there give a triple salute, together with the batteries of the place for the celebration of the famous 2d day of May, 1808; the said troops were formed accordingly in a rank of battle, on the road to Caya, and received his excellency at half after four in the evening with loud acclamations of joy and respect, as a token of their unfeigned affection to him; and on his inspecting them, an unanimous vociferating compliment bursted out saying--Long live our General!!
His excellency having soon after ordered to close ranks, addressed both the infantry and the cavalry, with a short but spirited discourse; taking a view of their duties and obligations, offering his liberal discharge to any among them who had not the courage to fight, and concluded, demanding of all the oath to assist him in revenging his country and blowing out of the Spanish soil, all the slaves of the tyrant. The troops soon displayed themselves in a rank of battle, to give triple salute, and, marching in columns before his excellency, all repeated the same acclamations, thereby confirming the oath by them taken, in the presence of a respectable concourse of people, who were spectators to this most solemn act.
