The separating line between the Fifth and Eighth Precincts is Canal-st. On Saturday night at 11 o'clock an Italian, who keeps a fruit stand on the southwest corner of Canal-st. and West Broadway, called the attention of the officer on post to a man lying in the doorway of No. 172 West Broadway. The Italian stated that the man had been put there by two other men who had brought him from the north side of Canal-st. and had then run away. The man in the doorway was found to be unconscious and was taken to the Chambers Street Hospital, where he died three hours later, never having regained consciousness. There were no marks of violence on his body. An autopsy will be made. As the crime, if there was one, was committed in the Eighth Precinct, and as the body was found in the Fifth Precinct, the detectives of both are working on the case.
The man was hatless and coatless and nothing of value was found in his possession. Some papers found in his pockets would indicate that he was Thomas J. Murphy, a drover of Kansas City. No arrests have been made.
