CONGRESSIONAL PROCEEDINGS.
WASHINGTON, Dec. 3.
I am very happy to learn this morning from Senators, that a bill will be introduced on Thursday, in the Senate by Mr. Douglas, for the admission of California on
The two Houses of Congress met under the most auspicious circumstances. The prospect of continued peace broad and of rapid advancement in greatness, strength and prosperity, at home, is not darkened by a single cloud. The members of two great and lately contending parties of the country come to Congress in harmony and with an unusual manifestation of mutual good feeling. The relation between the Whigs and Democrats are evidently much more cordial than ever. The Democratic members bear their defeat with good humor, and they seem disposed to give Gen. Taylor and his administration a very fair trial and a liberal support, so far as may be consistent with democratic principles.
There is a prospect, and I may say that I may give an assurance that the perilous sectional discussion, lately, so threatening, is no longer formidable, and will be settled in the course of this session, and at an early day, by the admission of California as a State into the Union. Mr. Douglas gave notice of a bill for that purpose to-day.
