They Serenade a Hospital and are Giving a Fine Lunch.
The Pittsburgh Times sent Austin Beach to Washington City to do the inauguration, and this is the way his dispatch to Monday's paper winds up:
I had some interest in the clubs from Wheeling, and I kept on down the Avenue in the hope of finding them. Along about midnight, as I was stumbling over piles of building materials away out on Boundary avenue, I ran across a German friend of mine, a member of the band which had been engaged to head the William L. Wilson Tariff Students, and he explained the situation. "No, ve vas not in der parode," said he. "Vo vaited und vaited till vo vas almost frozed. Der club vas mad all der vay dro, und bimeby der captain says he vill bet—if he goes in der parode und der boys vas all vid him. Und den ho says, 'Ve must have somo fun,' und he points to a large building und savs, 'Vo vill seronade dot building.' Vell, vo marched ofer und the boys lined up und der band blaved. It vas a hospital, und Sisters of Charity vas in charge. Dey inwited us in, spread a fine lunch and entertained us for two hours. Ve had yust an elegant time."
I suggest to Pittsburgh delegations attending future inaugurations that they keep an eye open for largo buildings and givo serenades.
