Fires Four Polaris
While Submerged
WASHINGTON, (AP)—The submarine Patrick Henry has successfully test-fired four combat-type Polaris missiles from a position about 500 miles off the coast of Florida, the Navy announced today.
The firings were during an Oct. 15-18 period.
"All of the missiles went the full programmed range and landed in the planned impact area," the announcement said.
The full range of a Polaris is 1,200 miles, but the shots announced today were not necessarily all programmed for that range.
The Patrick Henry failed in earlier missile launching efforts several weeks ago. Three of four attempted launchings were unsuccessful.
The Patrick Henry was submerged during the firing of four missiles in the latest series of tests.
The Navy said all four missiles were identical to the tactical missiles which will be carried by Polaris submarines except for warheads and a small amount of instrumentation.
