Full Text

Barrios, the dead Guatemalan president, like Colman of the Argentine Republic, made a vast fortune out of the people over whom he exercised despotic sway, and invested in Europe and this country. His son, now in America, and from whom his country expected so much, will not return to Guatemala unless he goes back as his father's successor. Barrios sent for him to lead the Guatemalan armies against San Salvador, but he refused. It may be that the young man missed the supreme opportunity of his life when he refused that military command.
