On Board the Ville de Paris.
SIR,
October 18, 1781.
I HAVE the honor to thank your Excellency, for the news which you have communicated to me.
I have prayed General WASHINGTON to return my troops, which it is probable he has no further occasion for; Lord Cornwallis being already captur'd, of which news no doubt you have been informed.
As soon as the troops are embarked, it is my intention to leave this Bay, when I shall endeavour to contribute further to the Success and Safety of the United States, and prevent, as far as may be in my Power, the Designs of Sir Henry Clinton.
