SCHOOL
NOTES
31.
The Nome Public School under the supervision of Frank Smola has been very active lately.
After concluding the successful Christmas Seal Campaign in which the school played an important part, we are now selling war stamps in school regularly.
Every Monday the elementary grades send representatives up to two high school students who are in charge of selling the stamps.
They buy the number of stamps their class needs and sell them in their own rooms. This plan works well and the stamps are being sold at a rapid rate.
The high school is also presenting a play on December the twenty-second which will be well worth seeing.
It is being given under able supervision. If you don't like plays it will still be worth coming to listen to Frank Parton the pianist play.
The next time you see the school band play you will notice there is a new director.
Sergeant Meyer who was the former leader was transferred to Fairbanks. Under him the band learned much and all the members were sorry to see him go. He had been the leader for about eleven months. The present leader whose name is Corporal Kerstine came from Cleveland and is an able director.
Besides directing well he also plays the Trombone.
Even though the band is small, with a leader like the present one you may expect to hear good music.
The principals wife, mother, and children arrived from the states.
Now that the school is settled down you can expect much from the students.
