OF TOULON.
By an arrival at the southward we have received the particulars of the surrender of Toulon, to the combined fleets, as published by the French National Convention.
The facts agree with those heretofore published--but the motives which led to them are stated as directly opposite. The following is an extract from the Journals of the 9th September;
"The letter from the National Commissioners, stated that advice had brought intelligence, that the fort of La Marche, at Toulon, had threatened to fire upon the French squadron, in the port, in case it should attempt to oppose the entrance of the English; and that to shew, that this menace was serious, the people had actually begun to heat the furnace for red hot balls; that Rear Admiral Julien, abandoned by many of his officers, had been obliged to fly, and had taken refuge at Marseilles, with some of his soldiers; and finally, that eight English ships of war had actually entered the port of Toulon."
