SUICIDE
The following case of Suicide, which happened on board the packet Schooner Hulda & Anas, from New-York to this port, was handed to us by the subscriber: —
A young man, who came on board at New-York to work his passage, was observed by the mate to have talked incoherently on Sunday night, and next day, at noon, he came on deck apparently much disordered in intellect he took off his hat, and threw it overboard, on which Capt. Fitzhugh and his passengers thought it prudent to confine him, lest he should jump overboard; which was accordingly done in the forecastle, after taking the precaution of searching for a knife, or any thing else with which he might destroy himself; and removing every thing of the kind in the forecastle. As soon as he was settled below, I went down to examine him, I found him talking and looking wildly. requesting me his doctor, to dress his back, and observe how they had lacerated it, that they had given him ten dozen of lashes, &c. Thinking that he might have received some corporal punishment which made this fatal impression upon his mind;—I looked at his back and could not perceive the smallest trace of flesh ever having been injured upon him; his pulse was ninety: his tongue had fur in it, tremal; the pupil of the eye most dilated accompanied by vacant stare. I gave him twenty drops of tincture of opium in little weak toddy. with an intention of repeating the dose, if necessary, when the ebullition in the brain should have ceased but it appeared to have no effect whatever, and at five o'clock he forced his way on deck and was with great difficulty prevented from jumping overboard; he was forced down again, and in less than half an hour afterwards the mate came and told me, that he had cut his throat, upon which I ran up from the cabin to the forecastle, where I saw him standing in blood, With a razor In his hand, to prevent any one going down—he had cut into his abdomen; and across the flexor of the left arm, still holding the razor in his hand so prevent any one going down which the smallness of the scuttle rendered impossible to do it without being cut by him a the loss, of blood increasing so great, that he staggered and dropped; the razor on which—he had laid hold of, and brought upon deck when he expired, I suspect that he procured the razor from his trunk Which escaped notice when they were searching him. His name, from papers found appeared to be Potrick Regand, late steward of capt. the gun-

On Monday noon, he threw his hat overboard and was confined below deck by Capt. Fitzhugh and passengers after being searched for weapons. The doctor examined him, found no injuries but signs of mental disorder, and gave him opium, which had no effect. He forced his way on deck, attempted to jump overboard, was restrained, then cut himself with a razor procured from his trunk, and died shortly after.
