Full Text

The Clarksville Tobacco Leaf thus expresses itself upon the Gubernatorial question. We are satisfied that Judge Marks is one of the ablest and most popular men in Middle Tennessee, and no sounder and truer Democrat breathes the air of heaven. Should he be the choice of the convention no one will take greater pleasure in his support than we will. The Tobacco Leaf says:

Chancellor A. S. Marks ought to feel proud that although he is out of the political arena, and holding aloof as a just Judge should do, his culture and ability, his brilliant talents, and power as a debater, seem to have singled him out as a candidate for Governor. The Press speak of him in the highest terms and from an acquaintance with his reputation, with but slight personal acquaintance, we endorse all they have said. He is unquestionably the man for the place.

We do not assign his name as our candidate, but believing sectionalism, as a false principle and caring naught whether a good man for Gov. shall come from West, Middle or East Tennessee, we deem it fair to him to say that no man is better qualified to fill the place or to conduct the canvass. He will infuse into it fire and enthusiasm, while he will conduct a canvass with all the courtesy of a chevalier. He is young, liberal and progressive, allied with no clique or ring, or in any way so connected politically or otherwise, as to be objectionable to any class except that class who may want a man they can control. If such there be. We shall not urge his selection, believing that harmony and the selection of a sound and good man are the first requisites and we are willing to support, cordially, Gen. Campbell, of Jackson, or Judge Porter, of Paris, if their selection be deemed best; still, should Judge Marks be nominated, it will afford us great pleasure to support him.
