We are happy to announce the election, for the first time in Michigan, of a staunch whig to the United States Senate, Augustus S. Porter, of Detroit, has been elected, by a vote of nearly two to one.
From the Detroit Advertiser of Jan. 21.
U. S. Senator.—After a delay of two weeks, we have the unfeigned pleasure of announcing to our readers, that AUGUSTUS S. PORTER, Esq. was yesterday elected, by the two Houses, in Joint Convention, Senator to the U. S. Senate, from this State, for six years from the fourth of March last! This selection will be cordially responded to by the Whigs of Michigan; for although Messrs. Biddle, Chipman, Howard, Van Fossen, Noble and others, had warm friends among the members of the Legislature and people, and although either of the gentlemen would have honored the station had they been chosen to it—still, than Augustus S. Porter, no man has rendered more efficient service in the struggle for correct principles, and no man is more deserving of the honor which the Legislature has seen fit to confer upon him.
The selection of a Whig from Michigan, to fill the important office of Senator in the Senate of the United States, will be a matter of gratulation to the Whigs, not only of this State, but of the Union. This selection nearly consummates the Whig triumph in this State. There are a few more appointments to make, when Michigan (heaven bless her!) will present almost as fair an escutcheon as never faltering Vermont herself.
