Letter from Madrid, May 11.

As the Court insists upon the Payment of the 68,000 l. Sterling due by the South-Sea Company, Mr. Keene, the British Minister, makes Instances for the Payment of the 95,000 l. which the Court has granted for indemnifying the British Merchants.

The Marquis de Villarias has declared on this Occasion, that as it was agreed with the Court of Great-Britain, that if either a Part or the Whole of six Vessels taken from the English should be restor'd, the Value of them is to be deducted out of the 95,000 l. And as he had received Advice from different Ports in America that those Vessels were actually there, with their Cargoes, in the same Condition as when they were taken, it was consequently necessary to know, before the Court paid the sum in Question, whether that Restitution had already been made. The Ministers Plenipotentiaries of this Crown and Great-Britain, had their first Conference together last Week, about concluding a definitive Treaty between us and the English. -- Deduct 68,000 l. out of the 95,000 l. and there remains but 27,000 l. and if the Spaniards talk of further Deductions, probably they'll strike off the Debt to us.
