The Printer has been favoured with the following preamble to the act lately passed by the Assembly of Georgia for inflicting penalties on, and confiscating the estates of the persons therein mentioned. This short piece of pathetic language fully and truly describes the abominable enormities practised by the slaves of the British tyrant during the short stay of his dominion in this State.
-AND WHEREAS all and every of the aforesaid persons have been guilty of treason, in aiding, assisting, abetting, and comforting the generals and other officers, civil and military, of the king of Great-Britain, to enforce his authority in and over this state, and the good people of the same: And whereas the aid treasons have been followed by a series of murder, rapine and devastation, as cruel as they were unnecessary; and lawless power established on high, presented the melancholy picture of Indians inflicting the most dreadful punishments on both old and young, of the faithful and peaceable citizens of this state. Women and children sitting on the ruins of houses, perishing by famine and cold, whilst others were compelled to depart the state in the midst of a rigorous season, being previously plundered of theirs and their children's cloathing, and every other necessary which might tend to lessen or mitigate the uncommon severities exercised on the softer sex and their innocent babes; nor was this all; whilst these days of blood and British anarchy continued among us, executions of our citizens, taken in arms in defence of their invaluable rights were ordered to take place; executions as unauthorized by the laws of nations, as they were cruel in themselves; and only to be exceeded, if possible, by the abandoned profligacy of setting torches to temples dedicated to the service of the most high God, whereby a violation was completed of every right, human and divine.
