CHAUTAUQUA'S DOINGS.

Second Day's Proceedings of the Sunday School Convention.

The attendance Chautauqua yesterday was quite large. The exercises were opened by Rev. W. G. Jones, of Walla Walla, followed by a stirring address on topics and preaching by Rev. D. J. Pierce, who is his original way presented before the minds eye the two classes as they exist in the world Sunday. One sees all the dark and degrading features the other all the bright and beautiful. We are all miserable in the society of the former, while the latter makes everybody happy, and gets the most out of him. The convention organized by the election of Rev. T. G. Watson, of Spokane Falls, president, Mrs. S. Greene, of Seattle, secretary, and E. Calvert, statistician, and the above with Rev. G. W. Landon and D. C. McArthur, of Tacoma, as executive committee. Rev. Watson took the chair and opened the morning session by representing the work of Eastern Washington. He had come from New York, organized churches, but could not yet keep pace with the growth of the country. He further spoke of the influence of the mining camps upon the various communities, and urged upon the parents to pay carefully that this influence might be counteracted by the religiousness of the gospel of Jesus Christ. The people in districts more from the centers of civilization were stretching out their hands for help from God's people. On mission work he had pleasant rivalry in outrunning the Methodist pioneers. Mr. Ward spoke glowing terms of the agricultural qualities of the land of Eastern Washington Territory. Gen. Miller, of Olympia, spoke briefly of Western Washington. He reported our Sunday schools in Olympia, all doing good work. Rev. Van Meter thrilled all hearts with his recital of the mission work in Rome, especially with his account of the opening of the old torture room of the Inquisition. At the close of the service two men arose for the work. It is certain that a great deal of interest will be taken in mission work by reason of Rev. Van Meter's presence at Chautauqua. The Baptist schools of Seattle came on a picnic, passing the grounds merry with their laughing presence and their cheerful ways. The afternoon session opened with an address on the scope of Sunday school work by Rev. R. B. Dilworth of Walla Walla. Mrs. Ladlow of Seattle was introduced, and showed the necessity of earnest consecration on the part of the teacher. Rev. Watson, in a few remarks, urged upon those present to have the scholars memorize the leading portions of scripture. Rev. Mr. Pierce spoke in much the same vein. Mrs. Banks was called upon, and delighted the audience by the manner in which she conducted her class. Her method was to have them learn everything there was on the leaf so well that when the end of the quarter came the scholar would be as well acquainted with the subject as on the first day. This duty was made easier by having the class come to her home and engage in study. Mr. Ward stated that if we would be successful workers we must become as the children we teach, for they who sit to learn at the feet of the great teacher are best fitted to lead the lambs of the flock. All the speeches were interesting and cannot help bearing fruit, not only in the hearts of those present, but those under their control. The session closed by singing Keble's "Evening Hymn." Mrs. Geddes presiding at the piano.
