The American Party.
There is one great truth to be spoken and impressed upon old Whigs and Democrats. The new organization must be built upon the rock of Americanism, and not upon the sands of shifting Democracy and Whiggery. If Whigs wish to use the American movement for a temporary purpose, and cast off their allegiance when it has served their turn, they will evince it by keeping up their old party organization to fall back upon. We distrust, therefore, every man who calls himself a Whig or Democrat. We have the same instinctive dislike to it, as we have to the formation of Irish or German associations among us, they show a leaning and attachment to old prejudices, which must be thoroughly eradicated before they can become Americans. Upon the same general principle that we advocate the repeal of the naturalization laws, we demand the extinction of the Whig and Democratic party so far as the American organization can effect it.
