"Murder will out!" When our cordial, warm hearted friend and host, Henry Clay, visited Columbus, some weeks since, the papers asserted that his was a private visit on professional business: hence, the great greetings and luminous pathway manifested towards him was the more spontaneous and joyous—no demonstrations of public feeling expected—oh no, all the outpourings of over-flowing hearts, ready to burst with gratitude for "American System" blessings, was done without any factitious aid; and Lafayette's journey was the only parallel to it!— All very fine, if true; but, an awkward affair lately exposed some of the party machinery by which this eclat was produced. It seems that the coalition cormorants raised money by subscription to pay the expenses of Mr. Clay in Cincinnati: as, in that mysterious fatality, attending poor Harry of late years, a contribution paper, drawn up, by his miserable parasite Charles Hammond, was handed to a Jackson man, to contribute his mite towards defraying the sum of $62 75, incurred by Mr. Clay, and left unpaid, at the Cincinnati Hotel! A private journey indeed on professional business! Out upon such trickery to gull the people, create popular excitement, and bolster up a candidate. Away with such shallow stratagems. If nothing else could effect it, the falsehoods and forgeries of Clay's friends would alone defeat his election. We don't want to see him thus defeated. We want his strength fairly tested—for our favorite is a host in himself, never was yet fairly beaten by Indian, Turk or Christian, and we are firm in the faith that nothing but the Almighty fiat can prevent his election.
