UNCLE SAM IN THE ROLE OF MEDIATOR
for Europe's difficulties, seems to appeal
to some of the persons who object most
strenuously to Uncle Sam as the merchant
of fireworks, with Europe as his best cash
customer.
From here it appears that the position
of umpire is more precarious than that of
vendor of wares in the grandstand.
Those who would not have America become
involved in foreign conflicts should
recognize that the outsider who attempts to
stop a fight, or to arbitrate between belligerents,
is immediately involved. Not only
in danger of being struck by a wild swing,
he is almost certain to incite the anger of
one of the combatants, if not both.
Furthermore the mediator, in case a
settlement is reached, is obligated more or
less to see that the terms are carried out.
America has had experience enough with
playing western hemisphere policeman to
know better than to pin on a star as world
cop.
America sincerely desires peace, not
only in this country but for the world. Happiest
possible solution of the problem of
neutrality would be the sudden ending of
hostilities in Europe. But the slim chance
of our being able to settle things does not
warrant our taking the risk of umpiring.
