Full Text
During the usurpation of Oliver Cromwell, a question arose in the court of France, whether they should send an ambassador to him or not.--Cardinal Mazarine, at that time the most profound politician in Europe, expressed himself on the occasion in the following words:
"We do not send an ambassador for Cromwell's interest, but for our own. By being in England he will have an opportunity of procuring intelligence, and putting us on our guard against any designs the English may be forming against us.
"Supposing that their present executive government is composed of villains, it becomes still more necessary to watch their conduct; and were it necessary, for any political purpose, to negotiate with Pandemonium, if Lucifer, Moloch and Beelzebub, were hurled from their thrones, I would send an envoy to those cunning spirits who had supplanted them, though they were the meanest devils in the infernal dominions."
