Full Text

Jabez Anderson, (mentioned in our last as convicted of theft) was sentenced by the court to receive sixty stripes at three several times; and accordingly on Monday and Wednesday, he received forty in part pay; the balance due (twenty stripes) was bought off by a number of gentlemen, whose humanity in this case really shone with peculiar lustre. He appeared truly sensible of the heinousness of his crime, deprecated the disgrace more than the smart, and pathetically warned the surrounding spectators to shun those rocks he had unfortunately split upon.
