What is this article about?
In Southampton, L.I., Edwin Post claims one-third of a 17th-century graveyard adjacent to his property, building cow stables and pasturing cattle there. This disrupted Capt. His Cow
In a Cemetery
In the southern part of the village of Southampton, L. I., is an old graveyard which dates back to the seventeenth century, and in which lie the remains of many of the original settlers of the island and their descendants. Recently Edwin Post, who owns property adjacent to the graveyard, has laid claim to the ownership of about one-third of it. He has built cow stables on the part he claims, and has cattle pastured there. The trustees of the village endeavored to settle the matter, Salem W. Wales of New York being proposed as arbitrator, but Mr. Post refused to negotiate. The matter was kept in abeyance until a few days ago, when the funeral of Capt. James Herrick took place. Capt. Herrick, before he died, called in Capt. George White and implored him to see that he was buried beside his dead relatives in the old graveyard.
When the funeral procession arrived at the graveyard the mourners found Post's cattle grazing near the Herrick grave. The disturbed cattle scampered through the crowd, scaring the women and creating consternation generally. Immediately afterward a deputation of ladies called upon Capt. White, who is one of the trustees, and begged him to take steps to establish the rights of the people in the graveyard.
Capt. White and the other trustees began suit against Mr. Post, and the case will probably be tried before the September term of the Supreme Court.
