A.R.C. ROAD ITEM
Steese Succeeds in Fight for
More Funds—Dock Survey
Money Granted.
The Alaska Road Commission item
in the Army supply measure, which
calls for $1,000,000 for the construc-
tion of roads and trails in Alaska,
was passed by the Senate yesterday,
according to telegraphic advices re-
ceived at local Commission head-
quarters from Col. James G. Steese.
The Senate also approved $600 for
the survey of the local government
dock project.
The Army
bill is expected to be
passed by the Senate within a short
time. It will then go back to the
House and then to a conference com-
mittee. Colonel Steese hopes to get
the Alaska Road Commission item
approved by the conferees without
reduction, but it is hardly thought
likely it can be done. It is believed,
however, that a compromise can be
effected which will give the Com-
mission at least $750,000.
It is virtually certain that the
measure will be disposed of by
both Houses and sent to the Presi-
dent's signature by the end of this
month. As a large part of the Al-
aska Road Commission's funds, by
special legislative authority granted
last year at Colonel Steese's instance,
are immediately available upon ap-
propriation, adequate money for the
organization's early season work is
believed to practically be assured.
