This Time the Treasurer of a Cemetery Association.
Of late defalcations have been as numerous as dinners taken by an ordinary hungry man. This time the defalcation is by Mr. Jacob Renneker, the Treasurer of the German Catholic Cemetery Association. The defalcation amounts to $1,200.
Mr. Renneker is a prominent boot and shoe dealer at the northwest corner of Ninth and Main streets. He was always considered an upright man, this being shown especially so by his fellow Catholics electing him to the position of treasurer of the above named Association.
Last Thursday evening ugly rumors began to spread that his accounts with the Cemetery Association were not in ship-shape style. The Association thereupon, on the following evening, Friday, called a special meeting of the Trustees, and asked Mr. Renneker to give an account of his cash on hand. The sum was about $3,500, and one of the Trustees remarked that that was too much for a Treasurer to keep on hand unless he would give an extra bond for its safety.
Further investigation of the books were made, and then it was found that Mr. Renneker was $1,200 short.
The next day Mr. Renneker made an assignment, and now it is left to his bondsmen to make good the deficit. Mr. Hummelgarn, the auctioneer, is one of them.
Mr. Renneker was interviewed by a Star reporter this morning, and he at once admitted the fact of his being short to the tune of $1,200. He said that he had used the money, and that if the Association had but given him a little more time, he could have satisfactorily arranged the whole matter.
This was all that Mr. Renneker would say to our representative, on the plea that he was just then too busy to talk.
