NEW YORK-(INS)-Voting for the line-ups for the Annual All-Star game in Detroit July 10 indicates that the fans are having no trouble whatever in making their choices.
If the trend continues, there will be the line-ups:
NATIONAL LEAGUE
Gil Hodges, second baseman, Dodgers; Jackie Robinson, second baseman, Braves; Bob Elliott, third baseman, Braves; Pee Wee Reese, shortstop, Dodgers; Stan Musial, left-field, Cardinals; Duke Snider, centerfield, Dodgers, Carl Furillo, right field, Dodgers; and Roy Campanella, catcher, Dodgers.
AMERICAN LEAGUE
Ed Robinson, first baseman, Chicago; Jerry Coleman, second baseman, Yankees; George Kell, third baseman, Detroit; Phil Rizzuto, shortstop, Yankees, Ted Williams, leftfield, Boston; Don DiMaggio, centerfield, Boston; Ferris Fain, Philadelphia; and Yogi Berra, Yankees.
The voting has been reasonably close for most of the positions on the American League team, but the National League ballots have been overwhelming, in every spot except third base, where Cox of the Dodgers is giving Elliott a hard run for the job.
The size of the vote indicates that the fans have no doubts about Stan Musial and Ted Williams, the left fielders.
But the most overwhelming vote of all goes to Yogi Berra, the Yankee catcher. It is apparent that the fans believe there is no other catcher in his class in the American League.
You will note, too, that the fans have shunted Ferris Fain to the outfield to make room for Ed Robinson at first base. In this they agree with Jimmy Dykes, A's manager, who beat them to the move.
Jerry Coleman of the Yanks is only a shade ahead of Nelson Fox of the White Sox for the second base post and later voting may swing the tide in favor of Fox, who is having a tremendous year.
George Kell also is having a tight battle with Junior Stephens of the Red Sox at third base.
Phil Rizzuto, who won the AL's most valuable player award last year, is still the people's choice for shortstop although Chico Carrasquel of the White Sox has drawn thousands of votes.
Perhaps the only real surprise is the selection of Little Don DiMaggio over his brother Joe of the Yanks for the centerfield spot.
Taking them off their respective records this year, the fans have made the correct choice. Don has been an outstanding performer for years and it is only fitting that he should get national recognition at last for the great player he is.
As the line-ups stand today, the national leaguers have more power than their rivals. Every man on the nationals can hit the long ball and one of them, Gil Hodges, with more than a score of homers already to his credit, is taking dead aim on Babe Ruth's record 60.
However, pitching, as usual, will settle the issue as it always does.
