Managing the Phillies any time is far from a rosy assignment, but John Wesley Coombs, alias Jack, alias the Kennebunk Express, is taking aboard about the toughest proposition any major league pilot has had to contend with in many and varied moons.
Philly fans are disgruntled and are swinging the hammer on the team with both hands. They threaten to boycott the club because Pat Moran was fired. Coombs, while in good with Philly fandom, is up against the proposition of soothing the savage breasts of the former patrons of the team, who hate President Bill Baker so religiously that they will make it a hard row for John Wesley to hoe.
Then, to add to Coombs' discomfiture, he has but scant high caliber athletes out of which to mold a ball club. He has but little foundation to place a first division team in the field.
"The way of Philly managers is indeed hard" will be Jack's soliloquy before the 1919 season progresses very far.
Jack Hendricks says he still wants to manage the Cardinals, proving that Jack is a glutton for punishment.
