The Local News of Interest from Fair Play

(Too late for last week.)

Fair Play, Aug. 23.—Special: The Fair Play school opened on Monday morning with Rev. F. S. Childress in charge. His able assistants are: D. P. Matneson, of Long Creek; Misses Mary Beth Littlejohn, Ora Prince, Mrs. C. P. Thomas, Misses Ethel Farr, Lola Coffman, Eleanor Mann and Lillian Ponder. Miss Lil Thompson will have charge of the music department. Mrs. Henry Johnson, of Anderson, spent last week with home folks. Billy Pruitt and sisters, Misses Maurene and Louise, of Fayetteville, Ga., are visiting in our community. Miss Mildred Marett, of Chappells, was the guest of her sisters, Mrs. Chas. King and Mrs. Joe D. Glenn, during the past week. Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Childress were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Buckner, of Anderson, last Wednesday. Miss Montez Marett attended a house party given by Miss Henrietta Turner, of Westminster, last week. Misses Lake Glymph and Mildred Harbin have returned home after a delightful visit to relatives in Westminster. Mr. and Mrs. J. Earle Thomas and two children, of Kingstree, are visiting Mr. and Mrs. C. P. Thomas. Mr. and Mrs. N. J. O'Neal have returned from a week in the mountains of North Carolina. J. B. Harris, who has been visiting his aunt, Mrs. W. H. Holcombe, of Townville, has returned home. Misses Clarine Wooten and Grace Grahl, of Anderson, spent Sunday in our community with Mr. and Mrs. T. M. Wooten. Hoyt Wooten, of Anderson, visited home folks here Wednesday. Lillian Mays spent a part of last week in Lavonia, Ga. James Pullen, of Lavonia, Ga., is visiting his sisters, Mrs. Lou Leathers and Mrs. Tom Wooten. Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Cheek and Mr. and Mrs. Herman Cheek, of Atlanta, were guests during the past week-end of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Rector. During the past week Mrs. Lurea Long, of Anderson, visited in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Harve LeCroy. Miss Dorothy Alexander, of Anderson, and Miss Rachael Marett, of Pendleton, visited their grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. A. R. Marett, last week. On Tuesday afternoon Miss Montez Marett entertained with a lovely party honoring little Misses Dorothy Alexander and Rachael Marett. During the afternoon a number of games were played. All report an enjoyable time. Mrs. L. B. Marett visited friends in Easley during the past week. Miss Felton McGuire is spending her vacation with home folks at Long Creek. Mrs. Joe D. Glenn, Miss Mildred Marett and Mrs. Chas. King spent last Thursday with their sister, Mrs. McPhail, near Anderson. Lige Marett recently visited relatives at Long Creek. Hubert Mitchell, of Lavonia, Ga., spent several days last week with Mrs. T. U. Mitchell and children. On Friday the annual commencement of the adult schools was held in Walhalla. Those attending from Fair Play were Mrs. J. W. Rector, Misses Ethel and Ollie LeCroy. Friends of Sam Glenn were pleasantly surprised to learn of his recent marriage to Miss Cora Lee Jolly, of South Georgia. His many friends in our county wish for them a long and happy life. Mr. and Mrs. Thomas McPhail and son, of near Anderson, are visiting Mr. and Mrs. Chas. King and Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Glenn. Claude Marett, of Chappells, has been visiting his daughters, Mrs. Chas. King and Mrs. J. D. Glenn. On Sunday morning a baptizing was held at the Beaverdam Baptist Church and seven converts were added to the church by baptism. Miss Lil Thompson, of Selma, Ala., is visiting Mrs. Betty Harris. The protracted meeting at the Presbyterian Church closed Sunday night. Rev. Mr. Crowley, of Westminster, ably assisted the pastor, Mr. Clotfelter. Several new members were added to the church roll. The many friends of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Rector are very sorry to see them leave our community. For the past two years these excellent young people have been a great help to us, both in school and church, and in a social way. They leave for Nashville, Tenn., soon, where they will enter the Peabody College for the coming term.
