NEW YORK-When George Hoy, working for the New York Central in 1899, joined the BRT management was dismissing employees for membership in rail brotherhoods.
He had to join a New Haven lodge to enjoy the benefits of union membership.
In 1904 he transferred to Lodge 598 and has since been a continuous member of that lodge. He recently received his 50-year membership pin from H. C. Hoch, 598's president.
Hoy began with NYC as a construction gang laborer in 1891 and became a brakeman in 1899, when he joined the BRT. He retired in 1937.
Oldtimers J. Covert, J. A. Russell and Sam Strauss were present to extend their good wishes. President Frank Livingstone of Lodge 71 praised Hoy at the meeting.
General Secretary and Treasurer W. P. Kennedy wrote Hoy congratulating him on his long membership.
Younger members were urged by Hoy to attend meetings and support their elected officers and committees, reported J. M. (Jake) Gordon, member BRT Public Relations Advisory Committee.
