ANOTHER
Confidence Man.-For several
days past an individual, calling himself John
Kannon, has been figuring extensively, in a
small way, through the confidence game. It
appears, as we are informed by Officer Pendery,
of the Second Ward, that Kannon has been in
the habit of going on board of steamers at our
wharf, a few hours previous to their departure,
and, conversing freely with the passengers, gen-
erally finds a green one, from whom he ascer-
tains his destination, and then informs his
dupe that he is going to the same place. After
a brief acquaintance he invites his sucker-
friend to walk up town a short distance, as he
desires to make some purchases. "Sucker"
consents; they arrive near the corner of Walnut
and Fifth streets, when Kannon pulls out a
$100 note-bogue, as a matter of course-and
requests the loan of $30 from his green friend,
until he gets down to the boat-saying that the
$100 bill was the smallest he had, and he was
going up stairs to get some articles that he had
previously bought. Greeny advances the cash,
and up stairs rushes Kannon, who, knowing
the premises, gets out of the back way, and
through an alley succeeds in getting off.
Greeny, becoming tired of waiting for his kind
friend, and fearing that the boat would leave
with all his baggage, he rushes for the steamer,
consoling himself with the fact that he was a
consummate fool and a swindled individual.
By the above process, and in the same local-
ity,
Kannon swindled two persons out of near
$70 on Thursday last. He was caught and
lodged in the Hammond-street Station-house
in the evening, but the witnesses failing to ap-
pear against him yesterday, he was released
from custody.
