Extract of a letter from Capt. Spain, to his owner in Wilmington, dated Port Liberty, Guadaloupe, Dec. 14, 1801.

" I am afraid we shall be glad to make our escape with our lives before many days. The negroes have made two attempts to rise : the first was in Basse-Terre, about the first of this month, but without any success--they only stabbed four men in the town, and did some mischief in the country : the second was in this place on the night of the 10th inst. and they also were dispersed, and their ringleaders made prisoners.-Last night the negroes began their riot in the market place again, which greatly alarmed the people. The whites were running with their wives and children from every direction, begging of us to take them on board of our vessels. The women themselves did not stop at running into the river up to their waists, with repeated screams for God's sake to save them.- Altho' I used all possible exertions to cast my fasts off, my deck was crowded before I could effect it ; in a few minutes I was under way, towed out in the bay, and came to anchor.

" A flag of truce which had been sent to St. Domingo, returned yesterday with a very unfavorable answer : the words were. No. we will treat with no negroes or mulattoes, neither shall they hold any office; but we will be there in a few days, with a fleet of men of war and transports, and will shew you your places.

" The fever has been very mortal amongst the Americans ;some vessels have lost half their crews, and others nearly all."
