LATEST FROM PORTUGAL.
In addition to the particulars under Boston head, our correspondents advise of the arrival at New York on Thursday, of schr. Atalanta, capt. Palmer, from Lisbon, whence she sailed on the 30th June. Capt. Palmer informs, that the allied army had quitted the frontiers; a part of them were within the strong lines near Lisbon, the remainder at last dates, were posted at a bridge on the north side of the Guadiana to prevent the French army, 45,000 strong, passing that river. No battle had taken place since the commencement of the retreat. Soult commands the French forces. Additional reinforcements arrived at Lisbon from England on the 21st. The allies have plenty of provisions. Flour at Lisbon $13.50.
That the patriots and their friends have been compelled to retreat, will be very gratifying to Bonaparte's friends. But, if prudent, they will be temperate in their expressions of joy, both for sake of appearances, and because a little foresight might shew them, that their victorious brethren will soon be hard pressed by hunger.
