Show Window of J. Hyman, Jr., Broken In by a Negro.
Two Gold Watches and Several Diamond Rings Taken—The Thief Escapes.
The Wachhorst jewelry robbery a year ago was repeated in this city last evening.
About 7:40 o'clock, as J. Hyman, Jr., was sitting in his jewelry store on J street, near the show-window, he heard the crash of glass, and looking up saw a hand thrust into the opening made by breaking the glass and a couple of gold watches, several diamond rings and earrings, with some other jewelry, swept out of the window.
He sprang to his feet and gave the alarm, but the thief was too quick for him, and sped down J street to Fourth, and thence to Third and L, pursued by W. J. Hassett and another gentleman and several boys. He disappeared there, however, and at a late hour last night had not been captured.
It was a bold robbery, as there were several boys standing in front of the window looking at the jewelry inside, and it is stated that the thief actually pushed aside a lady who was looking into the show window, in order to get an opportunity to break the glass.
He is described by those who saw him as a slim negro, of about middle height. He must have cut his head quite badly, as a piece of his skin was found by Officer Douglas, who carries it in his pocket as a charm. The value of the property taken is several hundred dollars, but Mr. Hyman could not tell exactly, as he had removed part of the jewelry from the window earlier in the evening, and had not had time to make an inventory and find out what was gone.
